Cons Malware problems, comes with few applications, installation hassles. only one window manager
Microsoft Windows XP comes partially pre-installed on many x86 computers.
This is generally because of Microsoft's control of the major computer OEMs.

Microsoft Windows XP does not come with many applications.
Compare this with some distributions of Linux which have as many as 16,000 FREE additional applications.

Microsoft Windows XP does NOT come with an office suite.
Linux distro usually do.

Microsoft Windows XP has limited methods of installation namely just from a CD. A CD installation may not have the lastest patches. You often have to patch your computer even after a fresh install.
Compare this with Linux distros where you can do an install from ftp sites and get the lastest version thus eliminating the need for the initial patching.

Microsoft Windows XP is more prone to catching malware (computer viruses, worms, adware, spyware etc).
Compare this to Linux and OS X which are relatively free of malware.

Extra time and cost is incurred to maintain Microsoft Windows XP with anti-malware products.

Microsoft Windows XP comes with only one, unconfigurable window manager.
Compare this to Linux which comes with many window managers some of which are highly configurable.

Microsoft Windows XP requires product activation.
Compare this to the many Linux distros that do not.

Microsoft Windows XP works with a limited number of processor architectures (Intel x86 derivitives).
Compare this to Linux which runs on 12 different processor architectures.

Microsoft Windows XP does NOT come with source code.

Each XP installation CD can only be installed to one computer.
Compare this to Linux where you can install to as many computers as you like.

Microsoft Windows XP does NOT allow concurrent multiusers.

Microsoft Windows XP supports only a limited number of file systems.
