Works great! Better than built-in laptop audio!

The Bottom Line:
Very good alternative to laptop repairs and to cheap internal audio.
Not really sure why another reviewer was having problems with this unit, but I have none at all. It's true that you have to reinstall or reboot if you relocate it from one USB port to another, but this is true of many USB devices (including a couple WiFi adapters I have).
I bought this primarily because the ESS Allegro sound chip/modem in my HP Pavilion laptop just stopped responding one day. Nothing I could do would bring it back. I then bought a C-Media all-in-one USB sound adapter. It was cheap, but it sounded cheap and really wasn't up to driving a decent set of headphones. I still use it to record, but that's about it.
The Micro is a whole different animal. I don't game and so I don't use any of the special effects modes, including surround sound of any type, but it works great for standard 2-channel stereo. I use it with Koss PortaPros, Ultimate Ears 5-EBs, and my Grado SR60s. It drives all of them to very good sound levels and with low distortion and noise. Keep in mind that this is an older laptop running Win2K and with only 128MB of SDIMM, so I'm not running at a speed that a typical newer laptop couldn't run. The sound output is definitely much higher than either the C-Media or a SoundMax 102 provided.
Overall, a very nice unit for the price. Given the choice between repairing the internal sound card on my laptop or buying the Micro (assuming they would be the same cost), I would definitely go for the Micro.
