The Bottom Line:
if you have the cash. buy it. it's a great bang for the buck!
I just picked up two of these units to replace 2 17" dell lcds and couldn't be happier. I paid $650 average each with coupons. the 1600X1200 screen is amazingly sharp and no dead pixels on either unit which was great.
i have 8 lcds with 2 17's, 2 20.1's (now) and 4 envision 19" lcds (oh yeah...two hitachi 17" widescreen lcd's from japan) and the 2001fp is my favorites now. huge screens, sharp as can be, and good for gaming too. battlefield is good on it. and work/excel spreadsheets are enormous. using a dualscreen set up on this is more useful than my quad paneled 19"s for some reason...go figure.
the usb hub on the side is a godsend. i used them all the time for usb dongles and other memory reading slots for my many photographs that i take. (read on my rebel and 20D reviews :-) ).
color is quite uniform and the setting of these units are quite friendly. i do a lot of digital photography and have these calibrated with tools like the 'eye-one' which can set the colors correctly so that you can see the 'real' color of what you took instead of what the lcd thinks you see. my other dell 17" had some issues with color but after resetting...amazing. these actually came out of the box pretty well calibrated!! which is rare.
the unit has an enormous # of possible inputs which is great. i use dvi and vga. but could hook it up to any rca/composite input to watch tv i suppose. switching between sources is just an easy button away. no need to go into any crazy menu to set that up. great design. the stand is pretty good too and allows you to not only adjust height but also swing it left and right! great job dell. the cord management system could use some help (small circle hook on the back is pathetic) if they used a hollow channel in teh middle of the big stand tube...oh well. can't get it all!
i would highly suggest these units to anyone needing to upsize and save some $ while dell is aggressive in their sales. online shopping sites will list the deal days so keep in touch with those sites from time to time. sometimes waiting a week can save you $100/unit off a supposed 'sale' price!
