Toshiba's answer to the ipod craze; The 40 gb mp3 player
Pros
Quality is about as good as an Ipod's Cheap price Great quality
Cons
Frustrating navigation Bulky Gigabeat room isn't a good program
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is definately a fine piece of equipment and I use it a lot more than my Ipod
Since the huge craze of the Ipod there have been many new companies trying to copy it but none of them seem to get better than the actual apple product itself. The Gigabeat is the new Toshiba Mp3 player and although it isn't perfect, it definitely is very good. The Gigabeat holds 40 gigabytes and is much cheaper than the Ipod.
Programs
The main advantage to the Gigabeat over the Ipod is that it uses napster to go. Napster to go is a legal program in which you download unlimited songs to your mp3 player for a monthly fee. The Gigabeat is among the few mp3 players that have a large storage space that will work with the. The gigabeat will come with the basic Napster program and a program called Gigabeat room. Gigabeat room is a very bad program in which you can do very little. It feels like an average free ware program to keep your music in. You will be most likely using Napster to go for your music transferring.
Quality of the music
The music quality feels the same as the Ipod.
Navigation
This is definitely where the Ipod. has it over the Gigabeat. The Gigabeat really has an awkward navigation system where you use the cross on the bottom of it. This can take a while. Pressing it requires aim and it takes a while to scroll down and it gradually gains speed and if you are trying to get to an artist about three fourths down from your list, it is hard to stop right at that spot because it will most likely be going really fast if you have somewhat of a large library of songs. This took me a while to figure out.
Photos
Yes the Gigabeat holds photos, but once compressed to the size of the screen, it really doesn't look all that great and you aren't going to be probably showing around to a lot of people.
Screen
Screen features a lot of wallpaper included and you can add a picture from your computer for the wallpaper. The screen is bright and colorful, but is also small. It definitely doesn't get scratched up as easily as an Ipod does.
Durability
I have had my Gigabeat for over a year and the battery is still fine! I also listen to it probably an hour a day. I have gone through about four Ipods and I decided to try something new and this is definitely a great alternative to the Ipod.
How it looks
This is another category that the Ipod wins over. The Gigabeat is pretty big and bulky and an unexciting color. It does fit in your pocket though
Ear buds
The ear buds definitely do not look as stylish as the Ipod's. They sound pretty good though. It comes with a little remote that you can change the song quickly.
Battery Life
The battery life is very good on the Gigabeat. They claim to have a top of 16 hours for battery life and I wouldn't argue with that.
Programming songs onto it
This can be a bit of a challenge. In the options menu there are two ways to connect the Gigabeat: through Window's Media Player/Napster, or Gigabeat Room. You have to put it into an included dock and then have a line to connect that into your computer. This took me a while to figure out. Once you get to that you have to run a set up and then it is as simple as using and Ipod., just drag and drop. I have even gotten some Podcasts on it!
I got mine for around $200 which is a steal compared to the Ipod's price. If you want Napster to go and can get by the somewhat tedious learning curve of the navigation, I would definitely recommend buying this.
