The Bottom Line:
Unless this unit is given to you as a gift and you cannot return it, find another MP3 player.
This was my first high capacity MP3 player and the price was right so I thought why not. Well, let me tell you why not.
The biggest problem involves the file manager system. The gigabeat automatically files the songs by albumn, artist, and genre. You can fool around with either the unit or on the computer (through the USB hookup)to create your own favorites list of songs. However, there is NO automatic alphabetical listing of all the songs. If you don't know who sings the song, what album the song appears on or what the genre is, you have to search on your computer for the song using the gigabeat room software and add the song to a favorites folder.
This brings up the next issue. There is no search feature on the gigabeat. So, you cannot search for a song, albumn or artist by name. How stupid is this oversight? This makes the unit very inconvenient if you want to quickly find a particular song to play.
Another issue I have with toshiba is the earpods. The cord to one earpod is longer than the other. Probably because toshiba expects the unit to be worn on your upper arm or hip on the side of the shorter earpod. But this doesn't help those of use who simply put the gigabeat down on a table while listening. The earpods are useless at that point because the shorter cord keeps causing the earpod to fall out of your ear.
Navigating through the unit is like walking into a room in the dark and bumping into all the furniture before you figure out where everything is located. When you select into any given menu and drill down to a lower menu, there is no shortcut to get back to the home screen. You have to back, back, back out of the menu to get back to the home screen.
The display is a good size and brightness. However, there is no way to select what should be displayed during song play or to clear the screen should you look through menu selections. You just have to sit and wait, and wait, and wait for the screen to clear itself and get back to showing you the name of the song playing.
Video playback? Can you do this on the gigabeat? According to the user manual you should be able to play videos. However, despite my many attempts to do so, I can't seem to get a video loaded in so that it will play.
Pictures. You can load pictures into the unit. However, the gigabeat renames them so you will have to scroll through every picture to find a particular one you wish to view. The way the pictures are saved runs into the same problems as the saved music. No search function and poor cataloging.
The unit is pretty heavy and you definately need to purchase a protective case. Otherwise, one drop of the unit and the gigabeat will probably stop working.
I paid $100 for the unit which I feel was pretty reasonable given what it does offer. I am glad I didn't pay too much for this unit. Hopefully when I purchase my next MP3 player I will do a little more indepth research first. I can tell you this much, it will not be another gigabeat.
