Ladies and gentlemen there is war raging out of control within our society. The hot dog condiment bar within ballparks, picnics, barbecues, and carnivals is the battleground where this war is taking place. Mustard, ketchup, relish, and onions are fighting an all out turf war for control of the hot... Read full review »

Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders -1983

Pros Outstanding performances Macchio, Estevez and C. Thomas Howell
Cons Inauthentic in much the same way as the popular fiction that inspired it
Recommended it? Yes

This film has to go down in film history as one the the most underrated of movies created since 1950. The reason for this is that the majority of the audience who saw it in 1983, as well as the audience that rents it now, rents it because of the the book of the same name published by SE Hinton. I... When I was still a senior at South Miami High and a member of the school newspaper staff and Ms. Perry's first-period drama class, I was talked into going to see Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders, a novel for teenagers that chronicles the angst- and... Read full review »

Pros great actors, story
Cons too short

I have to say, that when I was in high school, I must have seen this movie about 100 times, literaly. I really loved it.
S.E. Heaton's books about coming of age were all excellent, and loosely based upon life experiences.
The cast in this movie is exceptionial. Mat Dillon, Tom Cruise, Rob... Read full review »

Pros The re-cut version of this classic movie is closer to the book version
Cons The new music score isn't better than the original

This is a review of the new two-disc special edition version of the movie which is a little different than the original theatrical release.

When I heard that this movie was going to be re-cut and re-released in a special edition, I was emphatic. I always thought the movie could've been a... Read full review »

Pros Excellant movie
Cons may be hard to find in video stores

This movie appears on the surface to be yet another story of social differences affecting teenagers. Good vs. Bad, East vs. West, etc. In this , its the soshes( social) and the greasers in small town Oklahoma. While the conflict is central, this movie explores many other issues-including poverty,... Nothing gold can stay

Cons Too stylistic for some tastes

When I saw Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel, two things quickly became true: the movie became one of my favorites, and I had to read the book.

Story: Three orphaned brothers, Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry Curtis live on their own, with Darry being a young... Read full review »

Pros Matt Dillon; Nice scenes very early on
Cons Heavy-handed treatment; weepy sentimentality

Francis Coppola directs The Outsiders as if he's shooting "Gone With the Wind". The characters and story don't hold up under the weight. The movie is based on a popular S. E. Hinton novel and Coppola would go on to direct another Hinton book, "Rumble Fish" that was even more stylized, when perhaps... Read full review »

Pros Great movie
Cons Kinda sad.

Francis Ford Coppola's The Outsiders was made in 1983. I saw it for myself in 1986 when I was only 6 years old. My older sisters had watched it and I watched with them. Because I had a crush on a few of the main characters, I loved the movie when I was a kid and watched it many times.

Book or Movie?

Pros Performances by young actors, good portraying of book
Cons Pulled away from book's theme a little

Although a book is usually better than a movie, in this case the movie was just a tad better than the book. This case happens to be The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The gangs and how realistic the director made the movie seems back up my opinion. When one reads the book, it is not that easy to picture... Read full review »

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel (2-Disc Special Edition) (Widescreen)

In 1983, Francis Ford Coppola's film of S.E. Hinton's novel struck a powerful chord with audiences, capturing the intense feelings of being caught between childhood and adulthood, and not belonging anywhere. Decades later, Coppola has revisited the film and reintegrated 22 minutes of character- enriching footage, including a new beginning and ending more true to the book. A rousing new rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring six songs from Elvis Presley and other music greats make this new version of "The Outsiders" one of movie history's great rediscoveries. The Outsiders [VHS]

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane
