Outsiders

Set in 1966; Produced and released in 1983.

Francis Ford Coppola's stylized teen melodrama is based on the popular novel by S. E. Hinton. In 1960s Tulsa, the "right" and "wrong" sides of the tracks are represented by rival gangs, the upscale Socs and the underprivileged Greasers. Darrel Curtis (Patrick Swayze) is doing his best to raise his two younger brothers, Sodapop (Rob Lowe in his first film role) and Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell). Sensitive Ponyboy is a budding writer in love with Cherry (Diane Lane), the unobtainable beauty from the enemy gang. When Ponyboy's buddy, troubled Johnny Cade (Ralph Macchio), kills one of the Socs in self-defense, their friend Dallas (Matt Dillon) helps the two youths hide out in an abandoned country church. There they live as exiles from a society that doesn't want them. But not all is lost, when Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas save some children caught in a fire they become unlikely heroes.

The young cast is the jewel of this sensitive, moving film. To...

Pros Outstanding performances Macchio, Estevez and C. Thomas Howell
Cons Inauthentic in much the same way as the popular fiction that inspired it
Recommended it? Yes

This film has to go down in film history as one the the most underrated of movies created since 1950. The reason for this is that the majority of the audience who saw it in 1983, as well as the audience that rents it now, rents it because of the the book of the same name published by SE Hinton. I... When I was still a senior at South Miami High and a member of the school newspaper staff and Ms. Perry's first-period drama class, I was talked into going to see Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation of S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders, a novel for teenagers that chronicles the angst- and... Read full review »

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel (2-Disc Special Edition) (Widescreen)

In 1983, Francis Ford Coppola's film of S.E. Hinton's novel struck a powerful chord with audiences, capturing the intense feelings of being caught between childhood and adulthood, and not belonging anywhere. Decades later, Coppola has revisited the film and reintegrated 22 minutes of character- enriching footage, including a new beginning and ending more true to the book. A rousing new rock-n-roll soundtrack featuring six songs from Elvis Presley and other music greats make this new version of "The Outsiders" one of movie history's great rediscoveries. Audio Commentary, Director Commentary, Trailer, Featurette, Scene Selectionns. "Making-of Documentary: "Staying Gold." and "On Location With S.E. The Outsiders [VHS]

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane
