Cons cheesy one-liners, corny plot, not as memorable as the book

Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) directed by Eric Brevig is one of those popular feel good explorer oriented movies where viewers are asked to go on a quest with Bostonian volcanologist Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) and his colleagues to you guessed it, the center of the earth. Dropped... Pros Exciting scenes, Anita Briem, 3D
Cons May put off those expecting an interpretation of the Verne novel
Recommended it? Yes

The plot

Professor Trevor Anderson had been continuing his brother Max's theoretic work of volcanic tubes that run through the earth while teaching a boring science college class. His nephew Sean, (son of his late brother Max) plans to spend 10 days living with Trevor while his mother gets... Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) would make Jules Verne cry

Pros A couple of decent setpieces
Cons The script, ignorance of logic, plotholes, etc.
Recommended it? No

I'm not sure how many times Journey to the Center of the Earth has been adapted into a movie, but this stinker should hopefully be the last one. It's awful in most every way. This movie is supposed to be family-friendly, but that just means that it is completely retarded. It's a movie that looks... Read full review »

Journey to the Center of the Earth: Fun Despite Itself

Pros Family-friendly movie, fun adventure, adequate special effects, simple plot.
Cons It's certainly not going to strain the brain.

My wife went to go see "Twilight" with her girlfriends Friday night, and it was just me and the boys. The dollar movie house in our neighborhood was still showing "Journey to the Center of the Earth," and even though I'd heard mostly negative reviews about it, I figured it might be a fun way to... Jules Verne wouldn't approve. Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D

byshopaholic_man Nov 1, 2008

Pros May get some to rent the superior original 1959 film or read the book.
Cons Everything. Jules Verne would not approve.
Recommended it? No

As a kid, I read with great joy Jules Verne's classic sci-fi novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. I also watched with great interest the 1950's film adaptation with James Mason and Pat Boone. Today, Hollywood has much better budgets and special effects technology so I thought I would see how... "I Give You the Center of the Earth."

Pros Fun story with decent special effects
Cons Slow pacing in the beginning; previews give away too much

Market saturation of advertising can be both good and bad. There are some movies I still refuse to watch because there was a commercial for them every 5 minutes. Yet sometimes I decide to see a film after repeated watching of the preview. That's the case with Journey to the Center of the Earth. And... Read full review »

Okay, I can be a big man about this and admit I probably shouldn't be reviewing the 2008 movie version of Journey to the Center of the Earth. I made a game attempt to read the book around the fifth grade or so but gave it up. (I was an advanced reader for my age.) Since then I've only read one book... Read full review »

Pros You can watch it in either 2D, or 3D.
Fun, sci-fi, kid-friendly movie.
Cons 3D leaves you with an enormous headache.
The acting wasn't great.

I've read quite a few reviews on the subject of this movie since it was released in the theater. Most of those reviews came from people who have read the title by author Jules Verne. I suppose if I'd read the book I might be singing a different tune. However, being strangely naive in that capacity,... Read full review »

Cons Poor special effects, and story adaptation.

Those who have seen Brendan Fraser in "The Mummy" trilogy may view this less visually appealing as even the third of the mummy series. The special effects were not bad, but were not good. You could see the background and the actors hadn't been properly synced together well enough, and the... Read full review »

I haven't had the chance to see the original that this movie was based on. I can't compare it to the older version. but In my opinion it was a very enjoyable movie. Something the whole family can seat down together and enjoy.
