CPU of Tomorrow, Just Not the CPU of Today

Pros SSE2 instructions, high RAM throughput, high clock speeds
Cons Poor speed-to-performance ratio, expensive, reliance on SSE2
Recommended it? No

After years of waiting, the Intel Pentium 4 (P4) was finally released last week, representing the most dramatic departure from the original Pentium Pro architecture since its inception in 1995. Oddly enough though, the P4's release was accompanied by hardly a whimper from the Intel marketing... Read full review »

The "4" must be number of years before it will be affordable

Pros Faster and newer than a PIII
Cons So? (See review)
Recommended it? Yes

Seriously, though, with its release of the Pentium 4 just recently, Intel hopes to yank back a chunk of the market share from rival processor manufacturer AMD. The 1.5 GHz Pentium 4 processor should be the fastest processor out there. Despite Intel's claims, however, is the P4 really the fastest?... Read full review »

Eye shocking speed

Pros fast
Cons expensive

I just upgraded my computer from a P1 120 to a P4 1.4 GHz and what a difference it makes. I feel like I just hit warp speed. I had gotten the Pentium 120 when it was the prime of it class and it is now at the bottom of the chain. So, I decided that I was spending way too much time doing simple task... Read full review »

Pros games; mpegs
Cons current apps aren't that good
Recommended it? Yes

There is nothing more satisfying than sitting in front of a 1.4GHZ P4 and starting a new Quake III game. Graphics run liquid smooth, its like mercury being drained at 1074x768 16 bit color resolution. Ecstatic, yes. Worth the 2k system? Hell yes. If games are your priority when buying a new... INTRO:

Once again the battle for Top dog in the CPU industry is picking up speed yet again , this time with the introduction of the Intel Pentium 4 into the mainstream market. This CPU is Intel's latest adventure in attempt to once again gain the crown over AMD. AMD more recently was the... Read full review »

If You Want To Throw Away Your Money Just Send It to Me

Pros SSE2
Cons price, performance, non upgradeable
Recommended it? No

The p4 is the biggest waste of money on the market right now. In every essence it's a rip off. Do not be fooled into thinking bigger is better or more is faster. Just because this is a p4 doesn't make it better than a p3 anymore that the fact that it shipped at 1.4ghz makes it any faster than a ghz... Read full review »

Updated memo to business users: 1.7GHz Pentium 4 is for gamers only

byozgamer May 29, 2001

Pros Great for gamers but still doesn't compare with AMD Athlon 1.33GHz processor
Cons Useless upgrade for business users
Recommended it? No

Intel's latest processor, the Pentium 4, received many mixed reviews when it was released last November. The new 1.7GHz version marks the first update to the family since the initial launch and I was able to test this new processor via a reference PC. For the average business user, the Pentium 4... Pros Fast, radical new architecture
Cons Expensive, lack of SSE2 optimized code

With the introduction of a new generation processor comes the inevitable confusion among consumers about what to get. And face it, the competitive situation in the PC micro processor market today has caused a pace of product introductions in shorter order than ever seen before in what was already a... Why I won't be buying a Pentium 4 any time soon

Pros brand name, may be good later on
Cons slow with most software, extremely expensive, RDRAM

The Background:

Intel has traditionally held the crown for processors, at least in terms of speed (just about never in terms of price if you don't go back beyond the last decade). Their 386s, 486s, Pentiums and Pentium IIs pretty much outperformed everything else on the consumer market,... Read full review »

The CPU everyone loves to hate, and for ALL the wrong reasons.

Pros FAST for SSE2 optimized apps, far greater scalability, even than the athlon.
Cons First cut chip will change soon, new power supply requirements
Recommended it? Yes

I've had my reservations about the P4. It's a new chip design from intel that deviates from the P2/P3 architecture we've known for several years. We've watched companies like AMD try to steal Intel's thunder by trying to beat them at their own game. You have to admit though, AMD is gonna have a... Read full review »
